Portrait of a Man with Gloves

Description

In this portrait of an unidentified man, Corneille pays particular attention to the details of personal adornment: the fur collar, the ring on his index finger, and the ruffled linen cuffs conveyed with creamy dashes of paint. This early work, with its relative sobriety, reflects the artist’s Netherlandish roots before he developed a more attenuated style in his work for the French courts.
