Curatorial Overview

“From a point of view over the water, we look across a bustling canal at a bridge, which is flanked by rows of buildings to each side in this horizontal painting. At the center of the composition, the pink stone bridge spanning the canal is edged with white stone along its three arches and the top of its stepped deck. At least fifteen people standing or walking along the bridge are painted with touches of dark red, brown, pale yellow, ice blue, white, and black. The canal is busy with gondolas and other small boats, each rowed by standing people with oars. Some boats have covered compartments while others are open with seated passengers. On either side of the canal, tightly packed buildings rise two to five stories high. The architecture includes arched windows, small balconies, and laundry hanging from lines. The colors of the buildings range from pale tan and ochre to darker reds and browns. The street-level areas are active with people walking, talking, or boarding boats. The horizon comes just under halfway up the composition. The sky above is blue with soft, streaked clouds, and sunlight illuminates parts of the scene, casting shadows along the buildings and water.”
