“References to the wells of Abraham, as they are commonly known, are found in Genesis (21:23–24 and 26:23–33). Coubertin typically painted religious subjects, but in this picture he depicted the site as a scene of contemporary life. This painting was exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1850–51.”
